Torre del Mar is one of the main tourist resorts east of Malaga. It is situated in the municipality of Vélez Málaga, the capital of the Axarquia region. It is located about half way between Malaga and Nerja. It is typically Spanish and during the months of July & August it is resident to Spanish families who flock to their homes on coast from inland areas to escape the heat. There are claims that Torre del Mar once formed part of an ancient Greek settlement known as Manake which is believed to have been destroyed by the Carthaginians, prior to the arrival of the Romans. These days the town is better known for its four kilometres of lovely sandy beaches lined with restaurants & bars.
Torre del Mar and its neighbouring communities are gifted with naturally gorgeous beaches. Among them are Playa de Torre del Mar, Playa Naturista Almanat (a nudist beach), and Playa de la Victoria. These were once among the best-kept secrets of the Costa del Sol. Today, the sands of this southern coast of Spain is slowly being discovered by travellers from around the world.
Torre del Mar beach is ideal for visiting with family, because it has all types of services. This beach has been awarded with the Q quality, a distinction that is awarded to beaches that provide a good service to tourists by the Institute for Tourism Quality. In 2019 it received the Blue Flag. It has a children’s play area where children can enjoy attractions and activities with other children. Slides, swings and seesaws, among others, making it much more fun day at beach for the little ones. Set on the beach are table tennis tables, volleyball courts and a regular timetable of sporting activities.
The extensive promenade, which is divided into two: the Paseo Maritimo de Poniente and the Paseo Maritimo de Levante is adorned with palm trees, fountains and circular pathways that lead through the garden areas. During summer, both sides of the promenade are filled with people. There are live music events and summer night markets. This promenade follows the coast to reach the Marina of Caleta de Vélez which has over 200 berths and offers sailing and a variety of other water sports.
